Fishing Reports
Jan. 17, 2009
Well its 2009 and here is the first fishing report for the year. I am now back to guiding for myself again and this will be the first of many fishing reports to come this year.
The South Holston brown trout spawn is wrapping up. There are very few fish still on the redds. Most have gone back to there wintering holes. We are seeing Blue Wing Olives as the predominant daily hatch over most of the river. When the BWO’s hatch we start with a size 18 parachute and then as the hatch progresses you will need to drop down to a size twenty for the rest of the day. If you enjoy throwing really small flies on light tippet, then the Osceola Island Weir area is where you need to be fishing. We have been having the best luck at the fish grate weir with a size 26 to 30 fly we call “Dang It”. The name comes from most folk’s reactions to seeing it. It came be challenging fishing flies that small but the rewards can be good. Here is one of those much talked about beautifully colored browns from the South Holston caught on a size 26 “Dang It”.

This one was caught on a size 30 blackfly dry on 8x tippet.

The Watauga has not been fishable due to being muddy and stained from all the rain we are receiving this winter. For the first time on a couple of years we are at nearly a three-inch surplus for precipitation. When the river is clear enough there is a really nice BWO hatch in the late afternoon.
We have been doing some research and development on a different type of fishing to offer our clients. We will have more news about this highly exciting fishing opportunity in the coming fishing reports.
We will be attending the 2009 Kentuckiana Fly Fishing Show being put on by the Derby City Fly Fishers in Louisville, Kentucky on January 31, 2009. Check out their website, www.derbycityflyfishers.com for more details.
As I said in the beginning of the report I am back to guiding on my own. We are already getting bookings for the upcoming Watauga caddis hatch fishing season and it looks like we will have a good year to water wise. Be sure to give us a call and get your trip booked with us before the calendar fills up.
